Research InterestsResearch In Progress
The study of the effectiveness of principal preparation programs for novice principals has been well researched. The International Study of Principal Preparation (ISPP) has explored the topic in over 13 countries. The first two stages of a multi-stage research project to compare principal preparation in Bogota, Colombia, and British Columbia, Canada within the broader context of previous ISPP studies are nearly completion. The initial stage set the backdrop by mapping the existing formal and informal programs for the preparation of novice principals in British Columbia, Canada and Bogota, Columbia. Following the mapping process, a survey investigating the usefulness of preparation prior to taking up the principalship from the perspectives of principals in their first three years in the job was sent to urban and rural principals in British Columbia and Bogota.
An in-depth analysis of the influences of leadership development coupled with cross-cultural comparisons is currently in progress. Of interest throughout the study is the concept of the globalization of research literature used in the programs. The current debate in principal preparation to understand the principalship, specifically the challenges inherent in the early years of the position and survey data that identifies the extent to which principals were prepared for these challenges is currently being analyzed. We anticipate beginning the 3rd stage, the interviewing process, early this fall.
