Professor Harold Richins

InterestsRichins Bio Dr. Richins is Professor and Dean of the Faculty of Adventure, Culinary Arts and Tourism at Thompson Rivers University
in British Columbia, Canada. He holds a Ph.D. from James Cook University in Australia and B.S. and M.S. degrees from University of
Oregon. Dr. Richins has previously served as Chair of the Graduate Program within the School of Travel Industry Management at
University of Hawaii. He also held academic leadership positions for over 15 years in Australia and New Zealand including Waikato
University, University of Newcastle and University of the Sunshine Coast. He was also Professor and Chair of the Resort Management
program at Sierra Nevada College in Nevada, USA. Dr Richins has significant management background with larger corporations
including Nike and Tektronix as well as within retail management and the tourism industry. This has included the development and
ownership of a special interest tourism enterprise (Island Adventures) with a focus on marine and yachting tourism, the co-founding of
a consulting company (Sierra Research Associates) working with the mountain resort industry and consulting for tourism enterprise
startups. Dr. Richins has also served on numerous community, environmental and tourism boards and has published widely with over
130 academic and professional research publications and projects in areas of tourism, hospitality and leisure, and related areas of
marketing, education, entrepreneurship, community and destination development and sustainable management.
PhD with a focus on decision-making, behavioral influence and management particularly within a tourism development and resort
destination context from James Cook University, Australia. Masters degree in business from University of Oregon, USA with
marketing major, resort marketing and entrepreneurship emphasis. Bachelors degree in business from University of Oregon, USA
with marketing major.

Over 150 academic and professional research publications and projects in areas of tourism, hospitality and leisure, and related areas of
marketing, education, entrepreneurship, community development and sustainable management. This includes over 60 refereed journal
papers, book chapters, edited publications and refereed conference publications. Have been directly involved in over 130 conference,
workshop and symposium contributions of which over 95 papers have been presented. Have also conducted numerous consultancies,
grants and projects in related areas of tourism and hospitality marketing, special interest tourism management (mountain tourism,
ecotourism, adventure tourism, cultural tourism, sport tourism), sustainable tourism, tourism decision making, community and
destination development and small business.

Extensive leadership in diverse educational institutions. Substantial experience in college/university administration, coordination,
management and teaching experience at eight institutions in four countries (Canada, Australia, New Zealand and USA). This has
included successful academic strategic planning, program development, administrative management, curriculum, coordination and
community engagement roles in areas of tourism, resort and hospitality management and sustainability and entrepreneurship.
Active development and management background in professional areas:
Seven years management experience with major corporations in various functions including Tektronix, Inc. and Nike, Inc.
Eight years experience in developing, consulting, marketing, operating and managing businesses, including five years in the
development, ownership, management and marketing of a small business enterprise with a focus on yachting holidays, special interest
lodging and recreation and adventure activities to resort destinations in the Mediterranean, Caribbean and Pacific regions: Island
Adventures Holidays. Currently conduct consulting work in ski and mountain resort management.
